2025 HFSC Theater on Ice/Show Skating Class

(For Aspire 1 level and above)

Theater on ice or “show skating” is a great way to learn and develop new skills and create avenues for skaters to explore. Theater classes at the HFSC will teach skaters the fundamentals of show skating while creating a fun and uplifting environment. Skaters will learn how to skate in a block, interpret various kinds of music, and emote to fit the theme of the music. Skaters can expect to be challenged with dance-style choreography and complex skating patterns.

Skating skills:

Blocking: Skaters will learn how to move in unison as a shape while using skating skills and keeping time to music.

Turns: FO, FI, BO 3-turns, rockers, brackets, chalktaws, mohawks

Unlisted jumps: split, stag, falling leaf, ballet hop, wally, transition hops, muzerka

Gliding maneuvers: spirals, hydroblade, lunges, spread eagles, Ina bauers, Y-hold

Slides: Forward and backward single knee slide, double knee slide, spider-lunge

Dance: choreography that utilizes non-skating moves such as running, heel turns, chaine turns, skips, stops, and kicks

Groundwork: rolls, fan kicks, jazz rolls

Music interpretation and improv:

A selection of music will be played with a prompt on how to interpret the feel of the song while teaching lip-syncing. Also, a clip of music will be used more than once to encourage various kinds of interpretation. (Ex. a clip from Vivaldi’s “Winter” can be used to emote happiness, anger, comedy, etc.)

Skaters will listen to a 1-minute section of a song, practice skating to the 1-minute clip, then perform a short routine.
